Monday's thoughts
Today's readings and discussions really caused me to think about allowing my students to do more writing about the things with which they are familiar. Most of the time I am asking them to write about a preselected prompt provided by me. While this is what they will have to do on the dreaded OAT in the spring, maybe I am "killing" their desires to write about something in which they are interested. I realize I can't do this every day, because they don't get to choose what to write about on "the test". Maybe I can incorporate this more this year as some of our "low stakes" writing.

I agree with you, Paula. YOu brought out some interesting points. I also, need to allow my students to write more about which they are familiar. I thought I was doing that with their journals. But I need to find a different way to convey that.
I am also, concerned with their writing proficiency (High Stakes) on the TEST. Pressure! (On teachers)
Paula, I agree with everything you said. I'm going to try the same things.
I agree about the preselected topic. I know on the test they give the prompt, but sometimes I need to let me students just "free think" and get thoughts down. At times though, this is much harder for them because they are "programmed" to answer specific things.
Paula,I understand your concerns. I need to do more writing with my students. We did some but so many just wanted to do two sentences.
They just didn't like it. Others did. Maybe some of this will help.
